Crazy new google feature

June 29, 2007

So, look up any local service on Google Maps, which for me has replaced the yellow pages, and there’s a new link in small letters that just says “call”.  When you click the call link, it asks for your phone number, then it calls the service & you simultaneously, so that you don’t get charged for the call and so that you don’t have to dial.  I don’t get the business strategy at all, but I kinda feel that way about 80% of Google’s products.  Gmail, Maps, Search & Advertising all make sense, but every other one, and there are like 50 or more, seem just kooky.

  1. Great way to crank call. Enter in someone else’s number as the call from and make them call like… a mental health institution. “Hello?” “Hello Betty Ford re-hab, can I help you?” “What? No, you called me.” “No, you call me sir.” “No, you called ME! You’re on my caller id.” “Calm down sir. How much have you had to drink…?”

  2. That is totally awesome. Done & done.

  3. Make sure you record that!

  4. BTW, APparently they are on to you:
Google takes fraud and spamming very seriously. We use technical methods to prevent future prank calls from the same user within a reasonable period of time. You won’t be charged for any such calls. Please contact clicktocall-support@google.com if you believe someone is entering your phone number without your permission or knowledge.

  5. They might as well put Jonson’s name in this warning.
